Old and modern communication

Definition of communication
Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages through verbal and/or nonverbal means--speech (oral communication), writing (written communication), signs, signals, and behavior. Adjectives: communicative and communicational.

Alternatively, communication has been defined as "a transactional, symbolic process of mutual influence occurring between two or more individuals that alters their affective, cognitive, or behavioral states" (Albrecht, Johnson, and Walther in Successful Focus Groups, 1993).

Communications (in the
plural) refers to ways of sending information to people through technology.
Old Communications
The history of communication dates back to prehistoric times, with significant changes in communication technologies (media and appropriate inscription tools) evolving in tandem with shifts in political and economic systems, and by extension, systems of power. Communication can range from very subtle processes of exchange, to full conversations and mass communication. Human communication was revolutionized with Origin of language|speech approximately 500,000 years ago. Symbols were developed about 30,000 years ago.
Writing: The oldest-known forms of writing were primarily logographic in nature, based on pictographic and ideographic elements.
The imperfection of speech, which nonetheless allowed easier dissemination of ideas and stimulated inventions, eventually resulted in the creation of new forms of communications, improving both the range at which people could communicate and the longevity of the information. All of those inventions were based on the key concept of the symbol
The oldest known symbols created with the purpose of communication through time are the cave paintings, a form of rock art, dating to the Upper Paleolithic. Just as the small child first learns to draw before it masters more complex forms of communication, so Homo sapiens' first attempts at passing information through time took the form of paintings. The oldest known Cave Painting is that of the Chauvet Cave, dating to around 30,000 BC.[1] Though not well standardized, those paintings contained increasing amounts of information: Cro-Magnon people may have created the first calendar as far back as 15,000 years ago.[2] The connection between drawing and writing is further shown by linguistics: in the Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece the concepts and words of drawing and writing were one and the same

*      Before human beings created languages and alphabets, they communicated with both sound and body language.
*      Arguably, the earliest humans related feelings and stories through sounds as well as body and hand gestures.
*      Some of these stories became illustrations, probably drawn in the dust on the ground before eventually developing into petroglyphs, or paintings created on cave walls.
*      As humankind’s communication abilities developed, other permanent symbols evolved:
*      Wooden totem poles
*      Native Americans used smoke signals and drums which were actually very effective and could be seen and heard from great distances.
*      Individuals communicate every minute of the day through non-verbal gestures and their choice of dress.
*      Other identifying forms of communication from the past and present include insignia worn by military forces.
